going back in time, bass lines from seven Hawaiian players 1966-34, 10-string lap bass

Post by Steve Atwood »

This is a tribute to some of the bass players from my favorite time in the history of Hawaiian music. It's all one take, with the originals slowed down from 2.5-7.5%, with some noise removal and loudness adjustment, and a bass boost.

1966 Norman Isaacs "Na Ai Ono" Sons of Hawaii "This Is Eddie Kamae"
1960 Joe Marshall "Ulili E" "Gabby Pahinui With The Sons Of Hawaii"
1959 Violet Pahu Lilikoi "Na Ka Pueo" Genoa Keawe "Party Hulas"
1958 Jimmy Kaopuiki "E Liliu E" Hawaiian Village Serenaders "Tapa Room Tapes"
1947 Joe Diamond "Maui Girl" "Andy Cummings & His Hawaiian Serenaders"
1937 Al McIntyre "Hame Pila" Lani McIntire And His Hawaiians
8/29/1934 Joe Nawahi "Minnehaha (Hawaiian Stomp)" Sam Koki w/Andy Iona And His Islanders

Thanks to Kumu Alan for his guidance. Hope folks enjoy a trip back in time.

Very cool, awesome choices! I remember your Sor etude videos from years back.
What scale length is that guitar? That bar is something to behold as well.

This is a few of years out of range (1973), but this might be my favorite Hawaiian bass track (Nedward Kaapana)
Hui Ohana - Punalu'u

Thanks Joe! The Nedward bass line is great, never listened to him before, sounds exactly like something his twin brother would create.

The guitar scale length is 32". It almost fits into the biggest gig bag I could find, the zipper doesn't quite close on the side.

The local welder happened to have a piece of bronze for the bar. Cost $300 to fit to size and polish. I'd like to have an F clef carved into the end.

Aloha, Steve

Apology: I was listening to "This Is Eddie Kamae" on YouTube last night and saw the album cover showing Joseph Marshall as the bassist. I had been working from mp3s from that album sent to me by Alan. He also sent "The Girl from Papalokea", where Norman played bass, which I only listened to once. Must have got them confused.
